The River Test and its banks are protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) forming a tree-lined wildlife corridor through the village of Overton within the Historic Core of Overton Conservation Area, within Character Area 3. This privately-owned upper reaches of the River Test and its banks runs between Station Road and Kingsclere Road in Overton, Hampshire.
The area surrounds the ponds and the settling lagoons, owned by the Portals Paper Mill, also within the conservation area. There is a willow carr, waterlogged, wooded landscape beside the River Test. The ponds and this landscape are visible to the public from the footpath and bridlepath crossing the private property.
The River Test is one of Hampshire's finest chalk streams supporting invertebrates, brown trout, mammals such as water voles and abundant bird life.
